Class of 2023: Heath

My journey photographing kids began a few years after I began my career as a photographer. Back in the days when I worked for Milestones Photography, I mostly shot weddings and did the bulk of the editing. I left kids and headshots to my boss Dave because, quite honestly, both subjects scared the living bejeebus out of me.

But Dave (being Dave) pushed me out of my comfort zone and had me start photographing kids and families. This was NOT something I ever saw myself doing (what did I know about kids?), but after a few sessions, my tune changed. This was fun, meaningful work.

Heath, who was just 4 years old at the time, was one of the first kiddos I photographed professionally. His family had just moved back to the area, and they were in search of a photographer who could document their growing family.

Fast forward a decade and a half later, I’ve been so lucky to have photographed Heath, his parents, and his little bro every year since. Like most of my long-held clients, I’ve grown quite an affinity with this family. Heath’s parents have been a parental inspiration. Both of their kids are well-spoken, kind, interesting, and curious. The best kind of humans.

Heath is already quite accomplished for just being 18 years old. Not only is he extremely active in theatre, but an accomplished artisan as well. When not on stage, you can find him in his workshop working on wood carving and metal forging. He also takes the time to mentor younger kids.

Last autumn, I photographed Heath for his senior pictures in downtown Fargo. As always, he rocked the session like a pro.
